Novum

In the context of speculative fiction, a "novum" (Latin for "new thing") is a scientific development, innovation, or factor that enables a story to take place in its new speculative reality. This "new thing" is validated by scientific concepts or logic, even if they are exaggerated, giving a setting a solid foundation based at least in part on reality. Stories tend to focus on novums or exist in a world fundamentally altered by the presence of a novum. Examples of novums include alien life, advanced artificial intelligence, and new technologies.
